Initiation 2023

Be Simple, Be Kind.

Initiation 2023

On December 22, 2023, volunteers from the Saving Lives organization embarked on their inaugural charitable relief mission in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia.

Upon our arrival to assess the situation, local guides shared the harsh reality of residents grappling for survival, with many enduring the pains of hunger.

Siem Reap grapples with challenges related to its soil quality, resulting in low agricultural productivity. Many residents depend on fishing for their livelihoods, and the dry season exacerbates the scarcity of fish.

The renowned Angkor Wat temple complex serves as the province's primary economic cornerstone, supporting the local tourism industry. However, in recent years, it has encountered substantial setbacks due to the repercussions of the pandemic.

Activity 1: Rice Donation for the Most Vulnerable

With the assistance of local enthusiasts and guides Ngim Chankeatha and Chhem Veasna, we had the opportunity to distribute rice to 200 impoverished families in the Watt Prasatkokchork temple, Siem Reap Province, at the Krolachea Pagoda. The representative of the Siem Reap mayor was also present, offering commendation and heartfelt support for our initiative, expressing both admiration and gratitude. This charitable event received coverage in the local news which has garnered positive responses.

Activity 2: Bicycle Donation for Needy Students

In this region, many students face considerable distances between their homes and schools, with long walks to school being a common occurrence. Some even need to traverse 7 to 8 kilometers to reach their schools. The daily trek to school is an exhausting experience for them. Furthermore, due to their families' financial constraints, as most parents are engaged in agricultural or fishing occupations, purchasing bicycles is often beyond their means. Prolonged walks to school have led some students to contemplate dropping out. With the provision of bicycles, the time spent commuting to and from school is significantly reduced, making the journey more convenient and manageable.

On 26 December 2023, "Saving Lives" distributed 70 bicycles to local underprivileged students. Through this initiative, they aim to inspire more charitable organizations from Singapore to assist vulnerable groups in Cambodia's Siem Reap Province by donating bicycles. Embracing the philosophy of "simplicity in heart, kindness in character," they aspire to spread love to every corner. The success of this event was made possible with the assistance of Hope Sprouts Executive Director Sally and her team, who played a crucial role in the accomplishment of the mission. The local news also covered our activities once again.

The presence of Saving Lives in Siem Reap, Cambodia, marks the planting of seeds for charitable activities, with the hope that it will draw more attention and witness the flourishing growth of these seeds.
